Friday Favourites

This past week has actually gone by really quickly, I can’t believe it’s  mid-April!

Africa holiday. I mentioned last week that I had decided to go on an African Safari holiday through Tanzania and Rwanda. Last weekend I forked over quite a sum of money for flights and the safari deposit, so that’s it, I’m really going!

Flexibility class. On Saturday I had my weekly flexibility class, and my stretchiness is definitely improving which is great.

Friends birthday dinner. One of my closest girlfriends turned 30 last Sunday so she left the kids at home with her parents and we caught up for dinner on the Saturday night which was awesome, we had a really good time.

Family catch up. On Sunday my partner and I caught up with my Dad and Step-Mum for lunch and then headed over to my grandparents place for afternoon tea. It was nice to catch up and spend some time together, we don’t really do it too often.

Monarto Zoo. I had a volunteer day on Wednesday and am now officially a “Mallee Minder”, yay! The highlight for the day up there was rounding up the wallabies for their vet check, oh man that’s a lot of effort.

I hope you all had a great week, if there are any highlights you’d like to share just add them in the comments!

Take care,

Throwback Thursday, 26 November – Hot Air Balloon

For my 30th birthday my partner took me on a hot air balloon ride. It was a magical, surreal experience. To be floating through the air in a wicker basket dangling from a balloon…It was really very calm and peaceful. The ride itself was followed up by a champagne breakfast, and the champagne part at least is tradition; after every balloon ride you’re supposed to toast the journey apparently. So for the post this week, I thought I’d take a little look at that history.

When we were ballooning we were told that ever since the first manned flight in 1783 pilots and passengers would toast the balloon ride afterwards as a thanks for a safe journey. Or rather a celebration that they survived the ride! There are also other rumours that champagne was actually carried on board to help calm down any spectators who happened to be around at the landing site and were lets say, not very happy about having a hot air balloon possibly landing on them…

Some other interesting facts about hot air balloons:

  • Hot air balloons as we know them, weren’t actually developed until 1960 when Ed Yost developed a propane burning system and a nylon balloon.
  • In 2005 the record for the highest balloon flight was set, the height was 21,290 metres.
  • The fastest speed of a hot air balloon has been recorded as 394 km/h.
  • The longest journey in a balloon, both in time and distance is 19 days,  21 hours and 55 minutes over a distance of 46,759 km.

That’s pretty darn impressive if you ask me!

Take care,

Friday Favourites, 20 November

What a busy week it has been for me this week. I’ve got my 30th birthday party coming up this weekend so I have been frantically trying to get everything finalised for that! But there were still some highlights thrown in there.

A Wedding. Not mine I’m sad to say. My partner’s cousin got married last weekend, it was quite lovely, the food was a bit over the top but it was still a nice venue and beautiful weather.

Family catchup. My partner’s sister came down from Darwin for the wedding so it was really great to see her and be able to catch up with her.

Early birthday present. When the girls and I had our regular Wednesday morning catch up, they gave me my birthday present early which was lovely. There was a voucher for makeup and a voucher for books, two of my favourite things!!

First 121s with my staff. As the new manager I have taken over catching up with the staff in 121s each fortnight and these first ones were really positive experiences, and I found really constructive and gave me a good indication of what direction each of the staff want to take with the team and with their own careers.

Picking up my cake! Tonight I am picking up the cake for my birthday, and I’m super excited to see what it looks like!

How has your week been? Lots of highlights for you I hope!

Take care,

Motivational Monday, 16 November – Things to do before I turn 30

Seedlings growing in peat moss pots

I turn 30 in one week. I’m terrified. There’s part of me that feels like I should have accomplished so much more by now, particularly in terms of my personal life. I always used to think that by now I’d be married with one or two kids, because you know, 30 is just so old. But now I’m nearly there I couldn’t imagine having kids yet, but even so I do feel that clock ticking saying “maybe you should before your eggs wither and die”.

This got me thinking, what should people accomplish, or know, before they turn 30? You know, aside from a “I’m turning 30, I have to check a dozen things off my bucket list” kind of thing. The internet is rife with suggestions of course, from you should know:

  • how to break up with a man/woman
  • how to fall in love without losing your self
  • what you would and wouldn’t do for money and love

To other things like you should have:

  • have one piece of decent furniture that hasn’t been handed down from family
  • gotten a tattoo
  • shouted the house a round
  • have a resume that isn’t the slightest bit padded

Some of these I can tick off, not sure whether I agree with all of these types of things. Some like falling in love without losing your self, or knowing what you would and wouldn’t do for love and money I think are all about knowing your self and having been on a path of discovery to find out who you really are. I’d like to say yes I know to that one but honestly I think the path to knowing our selves is a life long one and may change with time. Gotten a tattoo on the other hand well I have several but they’re not everyone’s cup of tea are they? Shouted the house a round, hell no, who has that kinda money to waste?

There are always things that I’ve had on my bucket list to do, so if we’re talking in terms of bucket list, these are probably the favourite ones I’ve ticked off:

  • Sky diving
  • V8 supercar racing
  • Overseas holiday (two of them actually)
  • Pole dance holiday (two of those)
  • Buy a house (two of those as well, this seems to be a trend!)

The next one to add is a hot air balloon ride, but that will be coming on my actual birthday.

In terms of soft skills, I don’t really know what to put there. I think things like:

  • Knowing how to be kind – people might think they know how but, for example there was an elderly lady who didn’t know how to use an EFTPOS machine and the cashier instructed her on how to use it but was short, not exactly unpleasant, but not kind and patient either
  • Understanding that everyone is different and stereotypes are shit and worthless and should be ignored.
  • Being able to surrender your heart to someone completely, as scary as it is, but wholly letting them in, and this is where being kind to each other plays a really big part.
  • Love an animal. I love animals in general (god knows how I’m not a vegan), but my dog, gosh she fascinates me, her paws her ears, I just find it so amazing that this sentient being who I cannot even have a conversation with seems as drawn and loving to me as I do to her.
  • Stop and be amazed by the world, there is so much to be amazed by if you just take a moment to really look.
  • Be able to challenge your self and your fears, this will help you grow in ways you could never imagine, and you will find courage you didn’t even know was there.
  • Don’t be afraid of the world, yes scary things are happening all the time and I’m not saying it couldn’t happen here, but I’m also saying, don’t live under a rock.
  • Seize opportunities and make things happen. Some people may seem like things just fall into their laps, but I can guarantee you that doesn’t just happen. If you want something, you need to grab it by the balls and just make it happen. Find the best strategy to get you what you want and just freakin’ do it.

Tell me in the comments below, what are some things that you would recommend someone does or knows before they turn 30?

Take care,

Friday Favourites, 9 October

I’m coming to the party a little bit late with this one, but I just needed to take a break from computers yesterday. I’d spent the last day and a half trying to make my laptop cooperate, it was very annoying, so I just needed to not look at it for a while!

Pole class. This is the exotic pole class I’ve been doing, still having fun, but am finding sometimes we learn so much of the routine it’s hard to remember it all! I am enjoying it though, I’ve learnt so many cool floor moves and transitions, so I feel a bit more comfortable doing floor work now.

New dancing shoes! I have new Pleaser dancing shoes which I got through an online store called Spice Up Australia. They specialise in shoes that are good for pole dancers.

Farewell lunch. One of the guys at work is leaving and so we had a farewell lunch for him. It was really nice to see such a big group of people get together to say farewell. It’s a shame he’s leaving but he’s onto something he’ll enjoy a bit more.

Birthday cake order. I spoke to one of my friends and she is going to make my birthday cake for me, I’m so excited! It’s going to be a two tier circle cake with silhouettes of pole dancers on it.

Dietician. One of the things I have to do for my eating disorder is to see a dietician who can help me begin to manage and control my eating, while I’m also working with a psychiatrist to move past the issues that have caused me to use food as a coping mechanism. It was a really positive first session and I realised that when my eating is normal, I eat fairly well and fairly nutritious meals, so that made me feel a bit better.

I hope you all had a great week too, let me know in the comments if there’s anything special you’d like to share.

Take care

Friday Favourites, 25 September

Another week has gone by, I can’t believe how quickly the year is disappearing! I have to confess, sometimes I find these posts hard to do because by the end of the week I seem to be starting to forget all the things that happened in anticipation of the weekend! Does anyone else have that problem or is it just me?

Birthday invitations. Last weekend I got together with my Mum and we started working on the invitations for my 30th birthday.

Application submitted. This is a bit exciting, but I also feel conflicted about feeling excited. I love what I’m doing, I like the company and the people I work with, but I saw an opportunity with another company which just looks so amazing that I just had to apply for it.

Shared morning tea. Oh this was so good. A little while ago my team and I won a video competition at work and we were given a budget of $400 to do whatever we wanted. One of the things we decided to do was hold a shared morning tea for all the other teams that were in the competition. It was really well received, and we had a great time, and we also had enough left overs to last for two days.

Automated reports. At work my team has to spend hours and hours a month generating reports for clients and making sure they’re accurate. It can be a stressful process because of some issue we’ve had in the past. Anyway, there was a hackathon recently at work and one of the teams worked on automating the reports. It’s just a proof of concept at the moment but we’re going to go ahead with it which is super exciting.

WFH. I am working from home today, and grateful I am able to do that. My neck and shoulder have been really sore and after the excruciating pain I was in yesterday I wanted to be able to lay down a couple of times during the day just to get some relief…seems to be the only way to get it!

I hope you’ve all been having a good week, let me know your highlights in the comments below!

Take care,

Friday Favourites, 4 September

Well it has been a bit of a quieter week for me than last week, work started to calm down which is nice, I’m able to get onto all of those pesky items that have been sitting on my to-do list for a while.

R&R last weekend. Oh my gosh, after a completely full on week at work it was so good to not have to do anything on the weekend except catch up on precious sleep.

New pole class. I started a new pole dancing class on the weekend, one I’ve not done before and I chose it to push myself out of my comfort zone a bit more with pole. It’s an exotic pole and floor work class, so there’s some different styles of movement compared to what I’m used to.

Team Lunch. My team entered a video competition where we had to show what a normal day for us at work looked like. We won the competition and were given $400 prize money and so this team lunch was the first one of the things we wanted to do.

Birthdays. It was my partner’s birthday on Tuesday, he wasn’t feeling too well that day so instead we went out for dinner on Wednesday night with his Mum and Gran and a few of his friends which was really nice. For his birthday I got him a year long subscription to the Racecar Engineering magazine that he likes.

My pole is up. So about month after moving into the new place my partner was finally able to put my pole up for me, yay! I was going to do some practice tonight but I think my partner shared his bug with me cos I’m not feeling well, but at least my pole is up so when I’m feeling better I can practice whenever I want.

Has anything special happened to you this week? Let me know in the comments below.

Take care,

Friday Favourites, 21 August

Another Friday means another weekend is here which is always something to be happy about. Although sometimes it does feel like the year is slipping by far to quickly! And sometimes that quick passage of time makes it hard to remember all the good things that have happened during a week, but here goes my attempt.

My 30th birthday. Hasn’t happened yet but I’ve started planning it and have already booked a location for it which is pretty exciting. I’ve also sent save the date messages to friends and family to try and gather postal addresses for when I have the invites ready.

Uni work. It has been amazing to have a light workload topic for a change, particularly with everything that has been happening with the house. This week I was able to get everything I needed done on Monday and Tuesday so I’ve been free to relax all week. During the weekend though I’ll do a bit of pre-study for the week ahead but otherwise, I am enjoying only having a small workload.

Sharing the driving. I might have mentioned this one before but with us living so far away from work now, we have started sharing the drive to work which has made it easier to adjust to. It’s a trip that I used to do when I lived around here a couple of years ago, but it’s nice not to have to do all the driving myself!

Sore muscles. Ok so this is a weird one to be happy about I know, but the reason I’m happy about having sore muscles is because it’s a reminder that I beat my personal best for pushups this week. I did 11 proper pushups, woohoo!

Haigh’s Chocolates. It’s Friday night so I’m unwinding with some Haigh’s Chocolatey goodness! Not so great for my figure but damn it’s delicious!

How has your week been? Leave a comment below and let me know what your highlights of the week were.
