Motivational Monday – Zoos

Zoos can be a controversial topic, especially depending on what zoo you’re talking about. Personally, I love the Adelaide and Monarto Zoos, I’ve been to two others overseas but they were the kind of zoos that drug animals for photos and I can’t get on board with that sort of practise.

Some people or groups (hello, PETA) believe animals, especially wild animals like lions, shouldn’t be held in captivity. But what happens when a species are dying out, say they’re critically endangered and in the next 10 years will be extinct in the wild. What do you do then? You bring that species into captivity and breed them with the aim of releasing a population of them into the wild.

Or do you think that we should just let these animals go extinct? Maybe there is an argument for that, maybe it’s the natural order of things. But what about when it’s not? Take the black rhino for example, it’s critically endangered in Africa and although in many areas it’s illegal to hunt them, it still happens. So sitting on your hands and thinking enacting laws is enough is equivalent to sticking your head in the sand and hoping the problem goes away. And it will go away because there won’t be any rhino left, but is that the outcome we want?

And so we come back to zoos, and the purpose of many zoos is not just to exhibit animals for the public to see, but to educate them on each animals’ plight. To conserve species using sometimes even a genetic based breeding program that incorporate zoos not just in one country but internationally as well.

I know there are zoos where the focus is on people being able to pet animals like tigers, or ride elephants. Those zoos, I have a problem with. They drug the tigers for a photo, they beat the elephants into submission, and that is just awful. Don’t support those zoos.

Zoos like Adelaide and Monarto Zoo, they are conservation focussed, they want to save species and educate the public and engage them in helping save the animals as well.

So I challenge you, go to your local zoo, not just to see the animals, but if the zookeepers do any talks, go to a couple of those, find out what the focus of the zoo is and how they achieve it. You will be amazed at what they are trying to achieve.

Friday Favourites, 11 December

It has been a really exciting week for me, there have been a couple of really big highlights.

Kayaks. Last Saturday I picked up my new kayaks which was pretty exciting. I didn’t go out on the weekend though because the weather was about 40 degrees celsius which was a bit too hot to be out for long.

Breakfast catch up. I caught up with a couple of girlfriends for breakfast. I haven’t seen them for a while so it was lovely seeing them for breakfast at a beachside cafe. Good company and a good view!

Zookeeper experience at Monarto. For my 30th my Dad and step-Mum bought me a Zookeeper for a Day experience at Monarto Zoo. It was absolutely amazing, such a wonderful experience to be up close and personal with the animals.

Test drove a new car. I’ve been looking for a new car and have quite list of cars to look at, and I test drove one that I’m pretty excited about and is up the top of my list and it was actually quite nice to drive.

Booktopia delivery. Today my birthday book haul on Booktopia got delivered which is super exciting. I went through all the sales and was able to get 24 books!

I hope you all had a wonderful week, let me know in the comments below if you have any highlights to share.

Take care,

Friday Favourites, 13 November

Things are starting to settle down this week which is a nice relief, the last couple of weeks have been quite busy. I hope you have all had a great week!

Zoo visit. I went to the zoo with my team from work which was lovely. It was a perfect day and we enjoyed each others’ company.

Deposit for cake. I’m having a custom made cake made for my birthday and not only is everything else for my party coming together, I just paid the deposit for the cake so the girl who’s making it can get ingredients and start working on it.

Morning tea. It has been a while since the two girls in my team and I have been able to catch up for morning tea because one has been on leave and we’ve all be playing a bit of catch up. But it was nice to sit down and see how her holiday was and just have a chin wag.

Lunch with Mum. I had lunch with Mum this week, it was a bit of a celebratory lunch because of my promotion and because she got her first job. Good for her, she’s been out of work for about two years while trying to get her life back on track after breaking down and trying to manager her bipolar.

Lunch plans. One of the guys in my team has organised a lunch with our extended family team because I have taken over managing both his team and another one, with a view to celebrate my promotion and the coming together of the teams. I was really touched by this, it’s a really nice gesture.

Let me know in the comments if you have any highlights you’d like to share.

Take care

Friday Favourites, 10 July

Given I’m on holidays at the moment, it’s pretty easy to come up with a few favourites for this week!

I’m on holidays, yaayyy! It’s our first overseas holiday together, which is pretty exciting, and we still have a few days to go.

We rode elephants! At the Safari and Marine Park we had the opportunity to ride an elephant, and we managed to get the naughty one who sprayed everyone with water which was very entertining.

We spent a Night at the Zoo. Well, not a whole night, but an evening. We got to meet the animals, feed them, do a tour, have dinner, see a couple of shows, it was amazing. If you ever go to Bali, I would highly recommend it.

White Water Rafting. We did Class III rapids including going down a waterfall, and if the food was a little iffy, the actual rafting itself was so much fun.

Frankenstein’s Laboratory. As cooky as it sounds, this was a restaurant/bar we visited the other night for a bite to eat. The whole place is themed like halloween, including the drinks which come served in beakers or syringes or even IV bags! It was very cool, they even had live shows and a live band as well. If you’re in Bali, I’d definitely check this place out if you want something different!

Tell me in the comments below, what are your favourites for the week?

Take care,
